Payment gateway
A payment gateway is the service that takes card and wallet payments for an online store, checks them with the bank and sends the money to the store’s account.
The gateway (or payment provider) handles the sensitive part of a card payment so the store never has to: the customer enters their card on the provider's secure page, the provider approves or declines it, and the money settles into the merchant's account after the provider's fee.
What to compare
- The fee per payment and any monthly fee
- Which cards and wallets it accepts, and in which countries
- How quickly money reaches you
- How refunds work
